Who Is Zeeshan Ahmed and What Does He Do?
My name is Zeeshan Ahmed from Lahore, Pakistan. I’m now a 23-year-old student studying BBA (Hons.) at a private University in Lahore. I am an introvert and rebellious by nature. I was always a class clown backbencher in school/college and got average grades because I had no interest in studies because it never really stimulated my mind.
Dear visitors, I am glad to share my journey and how I started my career as a Full-time Freelancer. I hope you will enjoy reading it and will learn something from my ups and downs.
I belong to a middle-class family, where everyone finishes their degrees and starts their career. I didn’t need to work until I had finished my studies but as I mentioned earlier, I am rebellious and wanted to be different.
I could have just asked my father for investment for any business but I’m somehow different from the running culture where youngsters rely on their parents and don’t work until their mid/late 20s.
What Jobs I have Done Before I Start Freelancing?
1- Customer Support Executive | Company: Talk Agent
I started my career with a BPO Call center / Software house as a Customer Support Executive in 2017 when I was a 17 years old college student.
I worked night shifts and after finishing my shift, I went straight to college. I only slept for a few hours and that too in the afternoon/evening. This went on for a while until I realized that I was just wearing out myself and I decided to stop going to college. I was not learning anything anyway so I chose my job and sleep over college for the time being.
I just had a private tutor teaching me at home to keep up my studies. This job and office was and still is the best thing that happened to me in my career even though I wasn’t paid well, I learned so much working with this company and it made me who I am today.
- I worked 8 hours on the night shift, sometimes 16-17 hours straight with no break.
- I worked 6-7 months, 7 days/week with no holidays (public holidays) because we were short-staffed.
- I used to provide Chat Support on multiple projects including, VPN, Blockchain / Crypto, Educational, Billing, and E-commerce websites.
What I liked about working here was that I had freedom. I could wear trousers, flip flops, listen to music, watch a movie/series, or smoke while I am working and nobody would say anything until I am good at my work. Wao…
I worked with Talk Agent for 18 months and quit, as my university had started and I thought that I wouldn’t be able to manage both office and university. This is still the best company that I have ever worked with.
2- Operations Specialist | Company: Vibrant Services
I thought this job to be for Customer Support. I went for the interview wearing a very casual outfitter t-shirt and jeans. Little did I know, the company’s Managing Director had flown from Australia so that he could do the hiring himself.
The interview started, I introduced myself and he started asking the usual questions like “Where do you see yourself in 5 years and why I should hire you?” etc.
Embarrassing it but works best for me ?
Everything was normal until my phone started ringing, I was embarrassed that I didn’t mute my phone, so I hung up the call. It rang again and this time he said: “It’s okay you can pick up”. So I picked up the call and I saw him noticing the tattoo on my arm. After the call ended, he asked me about my tattoo and showed me the tattoos on his arms.
It was almost as if we were two friends having a conversation. He said that he sees his younger self in me, full of spirit and earning young. Long story short, he hired me and showed me a big pile of resumes he had on his side table including candidates who were far more educated and experienced than me. Guess my tattoo had paid off? Yes / No.
I was a remote operations specialist for a security company in Australia where I had to hire, schedule, train employees, and also manage client relations over calls and emails. I worked here for almost 2-years and left due to a toxic work environment and lack of growth.
3- Other Jobs | 2-More Companies
I worked at two other jobs where I worked for a short time and I have given a short description of them below:
- UK-based call center where I provided call support. It was a 10hrs job. I left only after a week because, at this point, I didn’t want to compromise my health.
- USA’s #1 printing company where I was hired as a remote sales specialist. I left after 3 months because of office politics, lack of growth, and mainly because I had realized that a job is not something for me.
Where Did Zeeshan Ahmed Create Her Freelance Startup?
“Surround yourself with business-minded people, success can be contagious.”
My best friend introduced me to freelancing and I created my account on Upwork in May 2021, when I was doing my last job as a sales specialist. Here are the services I offered on Upwork:
- Customer Service
- Virtual Assistance
- Operations Management
There were no results because I only spent weekends on Upwork. When I quit my last job, I started giving my time on Upwork, sending multiple proposals every day for a few months until I finally received an invite in July 2021 from a USA-based retail store that required Customer Service. I was hired for around a $1,000/month salary at 1st job.
At this point, I was making around $2000/month. I also had my university with all this work and I was sleeping only 2-3 hours every day, that too in power naps. So I hired my close friend from my first office to do the job for the blockchain company.
I was so happy with this hard-earned success that I had broken my earning record. I hired my friend on a monthly salary that I had never earned from office jobs, which was a big achievement for me. I lost both of my clients in late December 2021 and got very stressed.
I took it positively and went on a trip to the northern areas for a few days to take a break because I had been working 7-days a week for a few months. I didn’t give up and landed another client in January 2022 and got my Top-rated badge on Upwork in March 2022. Worked more than 2,740+ Hours.
Now I’m earning good money, working out, and sleeping 7-8 hrs a day. I hope to open my office soon. The conclusion is that it is my story. There were a lot of ups and downs.
I thank Mubashir Ahmad to give me the opportunity to grace my short success story on his interactive blog Mubashir Talks. I wish him all the best with a good spirit.
